Weichen is a distinguished marimba performer and percussionist renowned for his versatility across solo, chamber, contemporary, and orchestral music. Born in 1982 in Tainan City, Taiwan, Weichen has established himself as a prominent figure in the global percussion community.
Currently based in Taiwan, Weichen serves as an assistant professor at National Chiayi University and was previously an associate professor at Yulin Normal University in China. He is also a core percussionist with ToolBox Percussion in Hong Kong and has gained international acclaim as part of the duo “Duo Lin-Lynn” with Dr. Lynn Vartan, with whom he has been performing worldwide since 2018. Their debut album was released in June 2024.
As an active soloist, Weichen has performed with numerous prestigious ensembles, including the Houston Symphony, The Concord Band, Helena Symphony, John Kong Youth Symphonic Band, Hsin-Chu Recorder Orchestra, Taipei Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Boston University Symphony Orchestra, and the Singapore Wind Symphony Percussion Ensemble, among others. His expertise has taken him to diverse locations such as Australia, China, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Mongolia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Italy, Russia, Peru, Mexico and United States, where he has given concerts and masterclasses.
Weichen has served as a jury member for several significant music competitions, including the Australian Marimba Competition, Taiwan Music Competition, and the Taipei World Percussion Championship. His contributions to the field extend to commissioning and premiering new works from notable composers like Yao Chen and Julie Spencer. His 2017 premiere of the "Zalan-Zalan" Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra received critical acclaim.
A highly decorated artist, Weichen won first prize at the 2008 Classical Marimba League International Marimba Artist Competition and the 2007 Italy PAS International Percussion Competition. His other accolades include the Silver Medal at the 2012 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Concerto Competition and the Outstanding Alumni Award from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2017.
Weichen’s orchestral career includes serving as the full-time timpanist for the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and as a percussionist with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra from 2016 to 2019. His orchestral performances have taken him to major festivals such as Ravinia, BBC Proms, and Lucerne, and he has played under the baton of illustrious conductors including James Levine and Bernard Haitink.
Weichen’s educational journey began at Taipei National University of the Arts, followed by advanced studies at Boston University and The Boston Conservatory under Timothy Genis and Nancy Zeltsman, respectively. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Music, a Doctor of Musical Arts, and an Artist Diploma.
In addition to his performing and teaching roles, Weichen is a Premier Artist of Marimba One and a signature artist for Innovative Percussion and Grover Pro Percussion. He has his own signature mallet line, reflecting his influence and contribution to the art of percussion.
