Dr. Weichen Lin is an internationally acclaimed marimbist and percussionist, recognized for his diverse performances in solo recitals, chamber music, contemporary works, and orchestral repertoires. Known for his refined artistry and dynamic stage presence, Lin has performed across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania, and is widely regarded as one of the most prominent percussionists of his generation.
He currently serves as Lecturer in Percussion and Marimba at Boston University, his alma mater. Lin is a Premier Artist with Marimba One and a Signature Artist with Innovative Percussion, with whom he designed his own artist series mallets. He is also a core member of Toolbox Percussion, a contemporary percussion collective based in Hong Kong, known for its innovative performances and outreach initiatives.
Dr. Lin’s professional career spans an impressive spectrum of positions. He was a percussionist with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra from 2016 to 2019, the first full-time timpanist of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra in 2010, and later served as the first percussion professor at Yulin Normal University in Guangxi, China. From 2020 to 2025, he was a percussion faculty at National Chiayi University in Taiwan. He also served as a committee member of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) Keyboard Committee from 2016 to 2022.
In 2017, Lin co-founded Duo LinLynn with American percussionist Dr. Lynn Vartan. The duo specializes in marimba and percussion duos and actively commissions new works. Their debut album, Stars Above, was released in 2024 and won the Gold Medal at the Global Music Awards. The duo continues to represent innovative percussion performance on the international stage through concerts and educational engagements.
As a soloist, Dr. Lin has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Mongolian State Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Southeastern Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra, Helena Symphony, Taipei Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Singapore Wind Symphony Percussion Ensemble, and the Boston University Symphony Orchestra. His performances span prestigious venues and festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, Grafenegg Festival, and the BBC Proms.
He has premiered numerous new works, including Azura by Yao Chen, the percussion concerto Zalan-Zalan by Julie Spencer and Gernot Blume, and Mask II, a double percussion concerto by Yiu-Kwang Chung. His performance reach extends to countries such as Japan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia, Mexico, Russia, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, the US, and more.
In addition to his performing career, Dr. Lin is a highly sought-after adjudicator. He has served as a jury member for the Zorigt International Percussion Competition (Mongolia), the Boston International Music Competition (BIMC), the Taiwan Cultural Cup, the Hong Kong Band Festival, MarimbaFest Australia, and the American International Music Competition.
Dr. Lin has received numerous international accolades throughout his career. He was the winner of the 2008 Classical Marimba League International Artist Competition and the 2007 PAS Italy International Percussion Competition. He was awarded the Silver Medal at the 2012 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Concerto Competition and was recognized as a “Rising Star” by Taiwan’s National Theater and Concert Hall in 2013. He was a two-time recipient of the Boston University Honors Award (2008, 2013) and was inducted as a lifetime member of the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society in 2014. In 2017, he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Taipei National University of the Arts.
Dr. Lin earned his bachelor’s degree from the Taipei National University of the Arts. In 2006, he moved to the United States, where he completed his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in percussion performance at Boston University under the guidance of Timothy Genis, principal timpanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2016, he was awarded the Artist Diploma from The Boston Conservatory, where he specialized in marimba under the tutelage of Nancy Zeltsman. His dedication to the advancement of marimba artistry is evident through his performance, teaching, and instrument innovation efforts.
