Dr. Weichen Lin is an internationally acclaimed marimbist and percussionist, recognized for his diverse performances in solo recitals, chamber music, contemporary works, and orchestral repertoires. Known for his refined artistry and dynamic stage presence, Lin has performed across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania, and is widely regarded as one of the most prominent percussionists of his generation.
He currently serves as Lecturer in Percussion and Marimba at Boston University, his alma mater. Weichen is a Premier Artist of Marimba One and a Signature Artist of Innovative Percussion, with whom he designed his own artist series mallets. He is also a core member of Toolbox Percussion, a contemporary percussion collective based in Hong Kong, known for its innovative performances and outreach initiatives.
Weichen’s professional career spans an impressive spectrum of positions. He was the first full-time timpanist of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (2010-2011), and a percussionist with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (2016 to 2019), and served as the first Associate Professor in Percussion at Yulin Normal University (2019-2020) in Guangxi, China. From 2020 to 2025, he was an Assistant Professor in Percussion at National Chiayi University in Taiwan. He also served as a committee member of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) Keyboard Committee from 2016 to 2022.
In 2017, Lin co-founded Duo LinLynn with American percussionist Dr. Lynn Vartan. The duo specializes in marimba and percussion duos and actively commissions new works. Their debut album, Stars Above, was released in 2024 and won the Gold Medal at the Global Music Awards. The duo continues to represent innovative percussion performance on the international stage through concerts and educational engagements.
As a soloist, Dr. Lin has performed as a concerto soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Mongolian State Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Southeastern Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra, Helena Symphony, Taipei Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Macau Band Directors Assocation Percussion Ensemble, Singapore Wind Symphony Percussion Ensemble, The Concord Band, Hsin-Chu Recorder Orchestra, Tainan Symphonic Band, Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band, Rainbow City Symphonic Band (Taiwan), Shatin Symphony Orchestra (Hong Kong), National Chia-Yi University Symphonic Band, and Boston University Symphony Orchestra. He has premiered numerous new works, including Azura by Yao Chen, the percussion concerto Zalan-Zalan by Julie Spencer and Gernot Blume, Clay Pipes and Spiral Shells by Jenni Brandon, and Mask II, a double percussion concerto by Yiu-Kwang Chung.
Weichen has performed as a guest orchestral timpanist and percussionist with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, Counterpoint Ensemble, Macao Orchestra, Boston Civic Orchestra, and Quincy Symphony Orchestra. Weichen performances span prestigious venues and festivals, including the Lucerne Festival, Grafenegg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, Wolf Trap Festival, Beijing Music Festival, and the BBC Proms during his tenure with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Weichen’s performances reach to countries such as Australia, Austria, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Peru, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Weichen has served as a jury member for the Australia Marimba Competition, the 1st Zorigt International Percussion Competition (Mongolia), the Boston International Music Competition (BIMC), the Taiwan Music Competition, Hong Kong Music Interflow, and the United States International Music Competition.
Dr. Lin has received numerous international accolades throughout his career. He was the winner of the 2008 Classical Marimba League International Artist Competition and the 2007 PAS Italy International Percussion Competition. He was awarded the Silver Medal at the 2012 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Concerto Competition and the laureate of 2013 Taiwan National Theater and Concert Hall Young Artist Competition. He was a two-time recipient of the Boston University Honors Award (2008, 2013) and was inducted as a lifetime member of the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society in 2014. In 2017, he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Taipei National University of the Arts.
Dr. Lin earned his bachelor’s degree from the Taipei National University of the Arts. In 2006, he moved to the United States, where he completed his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in percussion performance at Boston University under the guidance of Timothy Genis, principal timpanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2016, he was awarded the Artist Diploma from The Boston Conservatory, where he specialized in marimba under the tutelage of Nancy Zeltsman. His dedication to the advancement of marimba artistry is evident through his performance, teaching, and marimba mallet innovation. Weichen owns his signature mallet line expertly manufactured by Innovative Percussion.
